Fungus Gnat

Fungus Gnat

Fungus Gnat

Lycoriella spp. and Bradysia spp.

Color:  Black, brown, red or yellow as adult.
Size: 0.1-inch long.

In nature, fungus gnats breed in the soil, in fungi, and any place where suitable molds might grow. In buildings, they are most often associated with the soil in potted plants and in atriums. When plants are overwatered, molds in the soil are capable of reproducing thus providing a breeding medium for fungus gnats.

Fungus gnats are tiny flies that are simply annoying when found in buildings. Adult gnats are attracted to light and swarm around windows in homes.

Larvae develop in high organic, moist, environments, feed on fungi and decaying plant matter and can damage plant roots when prolonged infestation occurs.

Adult gnats are harmless to humans, although they can be persistent nuisance. They are attracted to light and swarm around windows in homes.

  • Plants should then be watered less frequently and only when watering is necessary. Soil in potted plants should not be allowed to stay constantly wet.
  • Yellow sticky cards can be used to attract and trap gnat for monitoring (and control of low-level populations).
