Color: Brown or Black

Big brown: 4–5 inches long. 3/8–5/8 ounce. 12" wingspan.
usually roost in caves, in fact they are cave ceiling 'dome roosters' but they will also roost in a variety of other less suitable sites such as hollow trees, old wells, mine shafts, and even abandoned buildings.
Through echolocation, a method using ultrasound and echoes, bats are able to locate prey as well as communicate with other bats. Bats are not blind, but their radar sensing is much more useful and better than their eyesight, especially since they are active at night!
Only the old world bats, such as the very large Flying Foxes, do not use this method of communication and hunting prey. Instead, these bats rely on their eyesight, even though they are colorblind, to find their food which mostly consists of fruits and nectar.
Most bats, including those in North America, eat insects such as mosquitoes, moths, crickets, gnats, roaches, beetles, and ants. Some of these insectivores can consume between 600 to 1000 mosquitoes and insects in a single hour!
Several tropical bats consume nectar from flowers. These bats are helpful in pollinating different types of tropical plants and fruit trees. Finally, there are a few bats that are carnivorous, eating birds, mice, lizards, frogs and fish.
Most bat species generally pose little threat to humans. The greatest legitimate concern regarding human health and bats is their ability to transmit diseases. As mammals, they can transmit diseases such as rabies through their bite. For this reason, handling bats should be avoided or if necessary, done with heavy gloves.
Bats and birds are both vectors for zoonotic pathogens (carriers and spreaders of disease that can be spread to humans)
Bat Prevention Tips
- Seal all cracks that are larger than 1/4" wide by 1 1/2" long and holes that are larger than 1/2" × 1/2". Bats can't chew through exclusion materials the way rodents do, so you have many choices for materials: Stuff It Copper Netting Roll, Pur Black Gun foam (32 oz).
- Screen vent pipes with 1/4" mesh.
- Install a one-way door to allow any bats that are still inside to leave the building.
- Screen chimney flues and caps with mesh that's 1/2" or smaller. (Remember to check local fire codes for information about covering chimneys.)
- Seal any gaps in the flashing around the chimney, and where the chimney cap meets the chimney.
- If the bats are roosting behind shutters, remove the shutter or space it further away from the wall by installing small blocks between the shutter and wall.
There are two ways to change an attic that may make it less attractive to the bats. (1) Increase the ventilation and decrease the temperature of the roost area, so it's not as attractive an incubator. In attics, install fans, windows, ridge or soffit vents, or insulation in the walls. (2) If you can't seal all of the holes, install a few floodlights or fluorescent bulbs in the roosting area. The lights should be left on all day and all night for several weeks. In later years, turn the lights on during the spring or summer occasionally, to discourage the bats from recolonizing the site. Leaving the lights on for so long could increase the risk of an electrical fire.

I have bats in the house: What should I do?
If you have bats in the house, it is best to contact a trained wildlife professional. You can provide some assistance by being the “eyes” and “ears” when the professional is not there. You can take steps to remove a bat that has wandered into the living area. After dark, turn out interior lights, turn on a porch light, and open the door for the bat to leave. This is usually very successful. Do not touch the bat as you can cause injury to the bat. Also, in some areas, bats are protected by law.
If possible, determine if the bats in the house are strays, meaning they accidentally reached the living area. These can be from local colonies in the structure or they have entered from the outside.
Commonly, if bats are living in walls or in attics of a house, one or two may periodically find their way into the living space. If the bats found are from colonies within the structure, such as an attic or in walls, an inspection of the attic and exterior areas should provide information as to whether the structure has a bat colony present. In the attic during the day, bat colonies might be found near the attic vents. Even if the colony is in the eaves of the house, a few might be in the attic. Visual confirmation is a good way to determine the degree of the bat problem. It will also save the professional time when they arrive.
As dusk approaches, look for signs of emerging bats on the exterior of the structure. This would apply to social bats, but these are most common in and around structures.
If there is no evidence of bats anywhere, but the one or two which have reached the living area, an inspection by a professional wildlife technician might be valuable.
How to Get Rid of Bats in an Attic?
There are several ways to get rid of bats in an attic. If there are just a few bats, and it appears that there is no colony present or if there is a solitary bat in the attic, they can be physically removed by a trained professional who has proper protective equipment.
There are several different approaches to remedying a bat infestation in an attic. However, it is important to note that many states have laws or regulations that address bat control and which provide specific requirements and protections for these animals. It is important to avoid using any home remedies to control bats, including those which involve mixing chemicals.
If you encounter such a problem, it is highly recommended that you contact a pest control professional who is trained in bat removal.
If there is a bat colony in the attic, it is best to exclude the bats from returning. Some social bats develop maternity colonies, or colonies of females gathered to have their young. The young are dependent on their mothers for some time. No colony should be excluded from return until the young are capable of flying. Prior to this, the adults return each morning and feed the young. Restricting access of the females to the young will prevent feeding of the young and they will die. Check the local bat species to determine when it is safe to exclude the colony. Usually state universities will have sections of their websites dedicated to locally found bats and when the young are reared.
When exclusion work is to be done, observing the structure at dusk will give an indication as to the entry and exit points. After the bats have left, the holes can be sealed. Check inside during the day and look for daylight after sealing. Also check for air currents which may disclose other access points.
One-way tubes, cones or other devices can be installed when the entry point is found. These devices can be placed over the entry and when the bats emerge, they cannot return back to the colony. These are very effective. Some people prefer to place bat houses nearby but the likelihood of the displaced bats roosting there is limited.
After the bats are removed, it is best to clean up any guano or urine to prevent spread of disease. Always use personal protection when cleaning up guano or urine.
